About Shepherds Bush Housing Association
Who is Shepherds Bush Housing
Association?
Shepherds Bush Housing Association
(SBHA) was set up in 1968 by members of the clergy and congregation
of the Church of St. Stephen with St. Thomas in Shepherds Bush.
They were extremely concerned about the lack of good, affordable
housing available in the area, and were determined to do something
about it.
The first house purchased and renovated by SBHA started in 1968
was at 220 Hammersmith Grove, although the Association did not
employ full time staff until 1972.
Since then, SBHA's general needs housing has grown to over
3,000, and we now work in many London boroughs: Hammersmith and
Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, Hounslow, Ealing, Hillingdon,
Richmond, Brent and Harrow. The Association also has approximately
300 supported housing bedspaces within these boroughs.
SBHA is one of the leading housing associations regarding tenant
involvement. Tenants joined the Management Committee in 1983, and
the Association provides financial support to an independent
Tenants' Committee. SBHA also encourages the setting up of
individual tenants associations.
Today the majority of our shareholder members are tenants, and
tenant representatives sit on every SBHA Sub Committee. Tenants can
hold all positions up to and including the Chair of the Committee
of Management, which runs the organisation.
Tenants are also consulted on all major decisions which affect
them (see
the Tenant
Involvement section for more information about how you can
get involved in the work of the Association).
How is SBHA Run?
The Association is governed by a Committee of Management, made up
of a number of Board members (including representatives from the
Independent Tenants' Committee) - all members serve in a voluntary
capacity. There are also a number of Sub Committees which look
after various aspects of the Association's work and oversee the day
to day running of SBHA by the staff of paid Officers. These Sub
Committees are:
- Housing Operations Sub Committee
- Finance and Development Sub Committee
- Audit Sub Committee
- Arrears and Evictions Sub Committee.
In addition there is also an Appeals Panel.
